There are three types of Banner Exchange programs. The simplest is an agreed exchange of banners between two program owners. Another is an advertising business that will pay program owners to place a rotating banner in choice spots on site. This second type will rotate advertiser's information on these banners for a fee or per click rate. The third type of banner exchange allows advertisers to place their banner in a rotation that will be shown based on the number of banners viewed by the advertiser. This third type is very similar to traffic exchange programs except it lists banners.

The banner exchange between two program owners is by mutual agreement. Each determines the value of placing their banner on the other site. With brief negotiations the exchange is made and each party is satisfied with the advertising option. Banners must be designed and ready for use. The usual size is 468 pixels long by 60 pixels high. It is not uncommon for these exchanges to be cost free for both programs.

The second type of banner exchange program is more complex. The exchange program identifies and makes contact with program owners to run their rotating banner in a prominent location for per click payment. These programs then become “publishers” for the banner exchange. Viewers of the program (often members) will occasionally select an option from the banner's rotations. The program owner is credited for this view of the advertiser's product, service or program. The advertiser pays the exchange program based on the number of views received. These payments are usually made in advance or by setting up an account with the exchange program. Rarely, arrangements are made for the advertiser to pay after a specified period of time, usually one month. These banner sizes vary depending on the number of words allowed.

There are two types of these banner exchange programs. One type will write or recommend you write a catchy phrase to entice the viewer to click for more information from your web site. These phrases are attached to your program and may be displayed with up to six phrases or links per display banner. Often these are batched so that similar programs are displayed at the same time to further entice the interested viewer. The number of ads per display banner is at the discretion of the publisher. These program owners are given the option to encourage participation and thus increase the number of possible viewers. The advantage of this type of banner exchange is that you do not have to have a banner. If you have not created or paid a designer to create a banner for you, this is an excellent advertising option.

The second of these banner exchange programs works exactly the same except it uses only program banners. For this advertising option, you must have a banner to be uploaded. The advertisers banners are shown in rotation each time a publishers page is opened or refreshed or a specified period of time has passed, usually 10 to 15 seconds.

The third type of banner exchange program works almost exactly like the traffic exchange programs. The advertiser agrees to view other program banners for credits. The credits are used to show their program banner to the other advertisers. As with traffic exchange programs, these can be very time consuming but cost effective if you have a limited advertising budget. They do offer credit purchases to eliminate the need to view the other program if your budget allows. This is a great advertising method if you have a very limited advertising budget and some spare time to view other programs or the competition.

Banner exchanges are a good means of getting name recognition and to get your program, product or service on more desktops and laptops. A well-designed banner can help to get your web site seen.
